Every Windows computer comes with a built-in instant messaging program called MSN Messenger or Windows Live Messenger. This free service from Microsoft helps users send text messages, do voice and video chats and file transfer between online friends. For enabling video chats, the user must have a compatible webcam and required drivers installed.
Sometimes, even if the webcam is connected properly and powered on, you won’t be able to use it with the MSN messenger. The webcam may work fine with other programs and services, but fails to work with MSN. Microsoft chat support team explains this as the compatibility problem between the webcam and MSN. Microsoft chat support recommends MSN users to follow the below given guidelines to fix the webcam issues.
Guidelines by Microsoft chat support team for webcam issues
The troubleshooting steps are as follows:
Restart the MSN Messenger client: Often, when the webcam video isn’t showing properly, it can be due to the problem with the initialization of the proper drivers. Re-launching the program can fix this problem.
Adjust the webcam settings: If the webcam settings have been altered, you may face this issue. In such cases, adjusting the settings can fix the problem. The settings can be found in the Webcam Options submenu under the Tools tab. Make sure that the webcam is selected. If any option is available with the current MSN Messenger version, adjust the color saturation, brightness et al. using sliders.
Reinstall MSN Messenger: Since the webcam is working well with other programs, the issue should be with MSN Messenger. So, after doing the first two steps if the webcam problem persists, uninstall the MSN Messenger program and then, reinstall it. You may download the latest version of MSN installation program from Microsoft’s website.
Check the hardware: The issue can also be due to a faulty webcam. Check and make sure that the device is properly connected to the machine. Also try updating webcam drivers with the latest and compatible one.
This step can often fix hardware issues. Following the troubleshooting steps properly should resolve the issue completely.
